What Islam actually says about God, the unseen and the end.
What are the five pillars of Islam?Shahada (testimony of faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (obligatory charity), Sawm (fasting Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage for those able).
- Shahada - testifying there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger
- Salah - the five daily prayers
- Zakat - the yearly charity due on qualifying wealth
- Sawm - fasting the month of Ramadan
- Hajj - pilgrimage to Makkah once in a lifetime, for those able

What is the purpose of life in Islam? The Quran answers directly: “I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me” - a life of knowing, worshiping and obeying Allah.
Who is Allah?Allah is the One God - no partner, no parent, no child - the Creator and Sustainer of everything; tawhid, His oneness, is the center of Islam.
How many names of Allah are there?A famous hadith counts 99 names - and Sunnah Daily's 99 Names page walks every one with meaning; Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) opens almost every surah.

- Led armies under the Prophet ﷺ and then under Abu Bakr
- Commanded at Yamamah, Ullais, Ajnadayn and Yarmouk
- Fought both the Byzantine and the Persian empires
- Wanted to die a martyr, and died in his bed
Worth knowing. He is often described as never defeated. Mu'tah is more honestly a withdrawal that saved an outnumbered army than a victory, which is what the title was given for.

Which prophet built the ark?Nuh (Noah), who called his people for 950 years before the flood came.
Which prophet split the sea?Musa (Moses) - Allah split the sea for him and his people as Pharaoh's army closed in, and he was later given the Tawrah at Sinai.
Which prophet was thrown into the fire?Ibrahim (Abraham) - the fire was commanded to be cool and safe for him; he later raised the Kaaba's foundations with his son Ismail.
Which prophet interpreted dreams?Yusuf (Joseph) - from the well and prison to Egypt's treasury; the Quran calls his surah “the best of stories.”
Which prophet ruled the wind and the jinn?Sulayman (Solomon) - given a kingdom like no other: the wind, the jinn, and the speech of birds and ants.
What do Muslims believe about Isa (Jesus)?Isa is one of the greatest messengers - born miraculously to Maryam, he healed and revived by Allah's permission; the Quran teaches he was not crucified but raised up by Allah.
Which prophet is famous for patience through illness?Ayyub (Job) - he lost health, wealth and children, held to patience and praise, and Allah restored him.
Who is named in the Quran? Prophets, Maryam and ZaydTwenty-five prophets are named, one woman is named - Maryam - and one companion of the Prophet ﷺ is named, Zayd ibn Harithah.
- Most-named prophet: Musa
- Then Ibrahim, then Nuh
- Maryam is the only woman named, and the only surah named after a woman is hers
- Zayd ibn Harithah is the only companion named, in Al-Ahzab 33:37
- The first human named is Adam
Worth knowing. Counts of how often a name appears differ with the counting method, so treat any exact total you see as approximate. Lists claiming the Quran names only three animals are simply wrong: the bee, the ant, the spider, the elephant and the cow all have surahs named after them.

What are the five daily prayers?Fajr (2 rakats), Dhuhr (4), Asr (4), Maghrib (3) and Isha (4) - 17 obligatory rakats a day.
- Fajr - 2 rakats, from dawn until sunrise
- Dhuhr - 4 rakats, after midday

How many rak'ahs are there in each prayer? The fard is fixed at 2, 4, 4, 3 and 4; the sunnah rak'ahs around them differ by school, so any single total belongs to one school and not to all.
- Fajr - 2 sunnah, then 2 fard
- Dhuhr - 4 sunnah (Hanafi; two in the other schools), 4 fard, 2 sunnah after
- Asr - 4 sunnah before, not emphasised, then 4 fard
- Maghrib - 3 fard, then 2 sunnah after
- Isha - 4 fard, 2 sunnah after, then witr as an odd number
- Jumu'ah - 2 fard in place of Dhuhr, with sunnah rak'ahs before and after
Worth knowing. The totals passed around as charts - 4, 12, 8, 7, 17 - are the Hanafi tally. Witr is wajib to the Hanafis and a strongly emphasised sunnah to the others, and the counts of nafl at the edges vary.
