The Origin

1 Why do we exist?

Every human being eventually asks it: what is the point of all this? Islam's answer is direct. We were not created by accident, and not for nothing. We were created to know and worship Allah.

"Worship" here is bigger than prayer. It means living your whole life - work, family, money, character - conscious of Allah and in the way He loves. The Quran also calls this life a test: Allah "created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds" (Quran 67:2). Not most deeds. Best deeds. Quality of heart and action over quantity.

That's the foundation of everything else on this site. Once the "why" is clear, the "how" - prayer, character, marriage, all of it - starts to make sense.

2 Who is Allah?

"Allah" is simply the Arabic word for God - the same word Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews use. Islam's core claim is Tawhid: there is exactly one God, with no partners, no children, no equals, and nothing like Him.

The shortest, clearest description of Allah in the Quran is a chapter Muslims recite constantly:

Allah describes Himself through His names: Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful), Al-Ghafur (the Ever-Forgiving), Al-Wadud (the Loving), Al-'Adl (the Just) - 99 names are famously counted. He is not distant either: "We are closer to him than his jugular vein" (Quran 50:16). You never need an intermediary to speak to Him. You just speak.

3 The creation of Adam

Before humans existed, Allah told the angels He was placing a new creation on earth:

Allah created Adam (peace be upon him) with His own hands, breathed the soul into him, and taught him the names of all things - knowledge the angels didn't have. He commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam out of honor. All did, except Iblis (Satan), who was of the jinn. His refusal came from one disease: pride. "I am better than him," he said (Quran 7:12). Arrogance was the first sin ever committed.

Adam and his wife Hawwa (Eve) lived in Paradise, were told to avoid one tree, and were tricked by Iblis into eating from it. Here Islam takes a different road from the idea of "original sin": they turned back to Allah, and He forgave them completely.

No human carries Adam's sin. Every child is born pure. We are on earth not as a punishment, but on a mission: to live as Allah's khalifah and find our way back to Paradise.

4 One message, many messengers

Islam did not begin in the year 610 in Makkah. That's when the final revelation began. The message itself - worship Allah alone, live justly, answer to Him - is the message of every prophet since Adam.

So Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus) - peace be upon them all - were all calling to the same thing. Muslims see themselves as the continuation of "the way of your father Ibrahim" (Quran 22:78). That's why believing in all the prophets is not optional in Islam; it's an article of faith. 5 What "Islam" actually means

The word Islam comes from the Arabic root s-l-m - the same root as salam, peace. Islam means submitting yourself to Allah, and finding peace through that submission. A Muslim is "one who submits."

The Prophet ﷺ said Islam is built on five pillars:

Pillars hold up a building - they are not the whole building. The rest of the structure is character, worship, knowledge, family, community. That's what the rest of Sunnah Daily is for.

6 The six articles of faith

Islam is what you do; iman is what you believe. When the angel Jibril (Gabriel) came to the Prophet ﷺ in human form and asked "What is iman?", he answered with six things:

Belief in qadar (divine decree) is the one people wrestle with most. The short version: Allah knows and has written all things, yet you genuinely choose your actions and are responsible for them. Trust the outcome to Him; own your effort.

7 The Quran and the Sunnah

Everything in Islam flows from two sources.

The Quran

The literal word of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over 23 years through the angel Jibril. 114 surahs (chapters). It has been memorized cover to cover by millions in every generation - a preservation Allah Himself guaranteed:

The Sunnah

The Prophet's ﷺ own teachings, actions, and approvals - how he prayed, traded, treated his family, handled conflict. It is recorded in reports called hadith, collected and rigorously graded by scholars (the most authentic collections being Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The Quran gives the principle; the Sunnah shows it lived. The Quran commands prayer - the Sunnah shows exactly how.
