Bismillah - welcome home

New to Islam? Start here.

You said the shahada, or you are close to saying it. Either way: welcome, and take a breath. Nobody learns this all at once, and nobody is asking you to. One day at a time.

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ

Wa idha sa'alaka 'ibadi 'anni fa-inni qarib

"And when My servants ask you about Me - indeed I am near."

Quran 2:186

Every step on this page saves as you tick it. There is no deadline, no score, and no one watching. The days are a suggestion, not a test - some people move faster, most move slower, and both are fine.

1 The words that brought you in

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

That sentence is the whole foundation. Everything else - the prayer, the fasting, all of it - grows out of these two ideas: only Allah is worshipped, and Muhammad ﷺ shows us how.

If you have not said it yet: you can say it right now, alone, out loud, meaning it. That is enough before Allah. Saying it at a masjid with others is a beautiful memory and gets you a community on day one, but it is not a requirement - the shahada is between you and your Lord.

2 Today - your first day

Four small things. That is the whole day.

You cannot get today wrong. "Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear" (Quran 2:286). If all you did today was say the shahada, today was the best day of your life.

3 This week

One habit and one skill at a time.

Missed a prayer? Pray it when you remember and move on. Guilt that makes you quit is from the wrong place; mercy that brings you back is from the right one. The Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464).

5 Things nobody tells you early enough

You do not have to change your name. Only if its meaning contradicts Islam. The companions kept their names; yours is part of your story.

Your family is still your family. Kindness to parents remains a command even when they do not share your faith - the Quran orders good company to parents who actively oppose it (Quran 31:15). Take telling them at your own pace, and if your situation makes it unsafe, your safety matters; the shahada did not come with a deadline for announcements.

Eating out is simpler than it looks. Skip pork and alcohol; seafood and vegetarian options are everywhere. Halal meat where you can find it. Do not let food anxiety keep you from living.

Loneliness is real, and it passes. The gap between leaving one world and belonging in the next is the hardest stretch of the road. Look for a converts' circle at a local masjid - every masjid has people who walked this exact path.

Beware of taking on too much. The Prophet ﷺ said "this religion is ease, and whoever overburdens himself will be overcome" (Sahih al-Bukhari 39). Anyone pushing you to do everything at once - or judging your pace - is not following the Sunnah in that moment. And for anything about your own specific situation, ask a qualified local scholar, not the internet.

For women: there is a whole module written for you - A Guide for Women - covering what actually applies and in what order, gently.

6 From here

When the first month settles, the whole site becomes your path: the journey runs from the foundations to the details, Test Yourself shows you what stuck, and the prophets and stories are where the heart gets fed. Keep the pace that got you this far: small, steady, sincere.

"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah."

Quran 39:53
