The 99 Names of Allah

Al-Asma al-Husna - the most beautiful names. Not a list to rush through, but ninety-nine doors into knowing the One you pray to.

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

Wa lillahil-asma'ul-husna fad'uhu biha

"And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call on Him by them."

Quran 7:180

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one. Whoever takes account of them enters Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736). The scholars explain that "taking account" (ahsaha) is more than memorizing - it is knowing what each name means, and letting it change how you live. You call on Ar-Razzaq when money is tight. You remember Ar-Raqib when nobody is watching. That is the point of the list below.

A note on the list: the ninety-nine are affirmed by the Prophet ﷺ in Bukhari and Muslim; this particular enumeration follows the well-known narration in Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3507. Scholars note its exact wording varies between narrations, and that Allah's names are not limited to ninety-nine - these are the ones singled out for this promise.
