1 Why marriage matters in Islam
Islam doesn't treat marriage as a formality or a cage. It treats it as a sign of Allah - in the same list as the creation of the heavens:
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً
Wa min ayatihi an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwajan litaskunu ilayha wa ja'ala baynakum mawaddatan wa rahmah
"Among His signs is that He created spouses for you from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquility in them - and He placed love and mercy between you."
Quran 30:21Three words to build a marriage on: sakinah (tranquility), mawaddah (love), rahmah (mercy). Notice the order - the goal is a home you find rest in, and mercy is what keeps it standing when the butterflies settle.
"When Allah grants someone a righteous spouse, He has helped him with half of his religion. So let him fear Allah in the remaining half."
Al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim 2681 - the origin of "marriage is half the deen"Marriage was the way of the prophets (Quran 13:38), and the Prophet ﷺ said plainly: "Marriage is my sunnah, and whoever turns away from my sunnah is not of me" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5063). Islam has no monasticism - piety is built inside family life, not by escaping it.
2 Choosing the right person
The Prophet ﷺ named the four things people marry for - and told us which one to bet on:
"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religion. So choose the one with religion - may your hands be covered in dust (i.e., or you'll regret it)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 5090, Sahih Muslim 1466The same standard runs the other way. When families are choosing a husband:
"If someone whose religion and character please you proposes to you, then marry him. If you do not, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption."
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1084Deen and character - both are named, because they're not the same thing. A long beard or a hijab tells you about practice; how someone treats a waiter, handles anger, and keeps small promises tells you about character. Ask about both. Involve people who know them.
You're allowed to look
Islam is practical: the Prophet ﷺ told a companion who had proposed, "Go and look at her, for it is more likely to create lasting affection between you" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1087). Meet, talk, ask real questions - with family present or in public. What's closed is khalwa, being fully alone together: "No man is alone with a woman except that Shaytan is the third of them" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1171). The chaperone isn't there because you're criminals; it's there so the decision stays clear-headed.
Then ask Allah: Salat al-Istikhara
Before deciding, pray two voluntary rakats and make the dua the Prophet ﷺ taught "for every matter" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1162):
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ
Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika wa as'aluka min fadlikal-'azim...
"O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and Your strength through Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You are able and I am not; You know and I do not; and You are the Knower of the unseen..." - then: if this matter is good for my deen, my life and my end, decree it for me and bless it; and if it is bad for me, turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it is, then make me content with it.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1162 (full Arabic text in any dua book)Istikhara is not a dream oracle. It's handing the steering to Allah and then moving - watch how doors open or close.
3 The proposal (khitbah) and engagement
The khitbah is the formal ask - normally made to the woman's family, openly and respectfully. Two rules keep it clean:
- No proposing over a brother's proposal. "A man must not propose over the proposal of his brother until he marries or withdraws" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5142). If someone's proposal is under serious consideration, wait.
- Honesty on both sides. Health, finances, prior marriages, plans - material facts that would change the decision shouldn't be hidden. Deception discovered later poisons everything the marriage stands on.
Keep engagements purposeful and reasonably short. The khitbah is a runway, not a residence.
4 The nikah contract - what makes it valid
The nikah is a real contract - the Quran calls it "a solemn covenant" (4:21). Five things make it stand:
- Free consent of both parties. Non-negotiable. "A previously married woman is not married until her instruction is sought, and a virgin is not married until her permission is sought" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5136). A forced marriage can be annulled - the Prophet ﷺ did exactly that when a woman came to him coerced (Sahih al-Bukhari 5138).
- The wali - the bride's guardian. Normally her father, standing on her side of the table: "There is no marriage without a wali" (Abu Dawud 2085, Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1101). He is her advocate and protection, not her owner.
- Two witnesses. Upright adult witnesses, so the marriage is public knowledge, never a secret arrangement.
- The mahr. See below.
- Ijab and qabul - offer and acceptance. The actual exchange: "I marry you my daughter..." - "I accept." Clear words, one sitting. This is the moment you become husband and wife.
The mahr - her right, not a price
Wa atun-nisa'a saduqatihinna nihlah
"And give the women their mahr as a free gift."
Quran 4:4The mahr is a gift from the groom to the bride - her personal property, not her father's, not the family's. It can be cash, gold, property - even teaching her Quran, in one case the Prophet ﷺ approved (Sahih al-Bukhari 5087). There's no minimum to impress anyone with: he ﷺ said "the best marriage is the easiest" (Abu Dawud, Sahih Ibn Hibban), and the mahr of his own daughters and wives was around 500 dirhams (Sahih Muslim 1426) - modest. Agree it clearly, write it down.
5 The nikah ceremony - simple by design
A Sunnah nikah is startlingly simple. What actually happens:
- The khutbah of need (khutbat al-hajah). The officiant opens the way the Prophet ﷺ taught (Abu Dawud 2118): praise of Allah, the shahada, and three verses commanding taqwa - including "Fear Allah, through whom you ask of one another, and the wombs" (Quran 4:1). A marriage is opened with a reminder that Allah is watching over this bond.
- Ijab and qabul before the wali and witnesses - the contract itself. Two minutes, and heavier than anything else that day.
- Announcement. "Announce this marriage" (Sunan Ibn Majah 1895). A nikah is public by nature - secrecy is the mark of the haram relationship, openness the mark of the halal one. Doing it in the masjid, with the community, fits the spirit.
How to congratulate the couple
The Sunnah replaces "congrats!" with a dua:
بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ
Barakallahu laka, wa baraka 'alayka, wa jama'a baynakuma fi khayr
"May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and join you both in goodness."
Abu Dawud 2130, Jami' at-Tirmidhi 10916 The walima - the feast
After the marriage (the Sunnah places it with the couple starting their life together), the groom hosts a meal:
When Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf married, the Prophet ﷺ told him: "Hold a walima, even if only with a sheep."
Sahih al-Bukhari 5167The walima is a celebration and a public declaration in one. Its Sunnah manners:
- Feed people according to your means - the Prophet's ﷺ own walimas ranged from meat to a simple date-and-butter dish (Sahih al-Bukhari 5085). The sheep is a ceiling story, not a floor.
- Invite across social lines. "The worst food is the food of a walima to which the rich are invited and the poor are left out" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5177). A wedding that only performs status has already failed its first test.
- Accept the invitation - being invited to a walima carries real weight: "Whoever is invited, let him respond" (Sahih Muslim 1429).
- Joy is Sunnah. Girls beat the duff (frame drum) and sang at weddings in his presence (Sahih al-Bukhari 5147). Celebration is not un-Islamic - extravagance, showing off, and haram content are the lines.
7 The wedding night - gentleness and dua
The Sunnah for the first night is tenderness, not performance anxiety. What's reported:
- Kindness first. Greet her, sit with her, share something sweet to drink - as reported from the Prophet's ﷺ own practice. The companions also recommended the couple pray two rakats together, the husband leading (reported from the companions, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah). Starting a marriage the way you intend to run it: with prayer.
- Dua with his hand on her forehead:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا جَبَلْتَهَا عَلَيْهِ
Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha 'alayh, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayh
"O Allah, I ask You for the good of her and the good of the nature You created her upon, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of her and the evil of the nature You created her upon."
Abu Dawud 2160- The dua before intimacy - for the whole of married life, not just the first night:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا
Bismillah. Allahumma jannibnash-shaytana wa jannibish-shaytana ma razaqtana
"In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep Shaytan away from us, and keep Shaytan away from what You provide us (of children)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 6388, Sahih Muslim 1434And a permanent rule begins here: what happens between you two stays between you two. The Prophet ﷺ called those who spread their spouse's intimate secrets "among the worst of people before Allah on the Day of Resurrection" (Sahih Muslim 1437). Your marriage's inner life is amanah - a trust.
8 Rights and duties - building the life after
The Quran's picture of marriage is two people covering each other:
هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَّهُنَّ
Hunna libasul-lakum wa antum libasul-lahunn
"They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them."
Quran 2:187A garment covers your faults, protects you, beautifies you, and stays closest to you. That's the job description - for both.
On the husband
- Full financial responsibility - housing, food, clothing, according to his means: "Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth" (Quran 65:7). Her money and income, if any, remain entirely hers.
- Kind companionship as a legal duty, not a favor: "Live with them honorably" (Quran 4:19). His ﷺ standard: "The best of you are the best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3895).
- Presence at home. Asked what the Prophet ﷺ did in his house, Aisha said: he was in the service of his family - and when prayer came, he went to prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 676). Mending, helping, being useful. Domestic help is prophetic masculinity.
- His final public instruction: "Fear Allah concerning women... you have taken them by the trust of Allah" (Farewell Sermon, Sahih Muslim 1218).
On the wife
- The same garment duties in return: loyalty, kindness, guarding the home, wealth and secrets he entrusts - "each of you is a shepherd and each is responsible for their flock; a woman is a shepherd over her husband's house" (Sahih al-Bukhari 893).
- Partnership in the deen - reminding, encouraging, raising children on it. The home is a joint project with two shepherds, not a hierarchy of served and server.
When conflict comes - and it will
- Address it early and privately; no scorekeeping in front of family or on phones.
- "A believing man must not hate a believing woman: if he dislikes one trait in her, he is pleased with another" (Sahih Muslim 1469). Marry the whole person, not the highlight reel.
- If it hardens, the Quran's process: appoint an arbiter from his family and one from hers (4:35) - structured mediation, fourteen centuries before couples therapy.
9 Common mistakes - culture vs. deen
- Demanding "dowry" from the bride's family. In parts of South Asia and elsewhere, the groom's side expects cash, cars, furniture. This is the exact inversion of Islam: the mahr flows from groom to bride, and pressuring her family for wealth is taking property without right. Zero basis in the Sunnah - cultural baggage, not deen.
- Wedding debt. Borrowing heavily for one evening's display, then starting the marriage under loans. The Prophet ﷺ: "the most blessed nikah is the one easiest in cost" (reported by Ahmad and al-Bayhaqi). A 20-minute nikah and a sincere walima are fully, beautifully Islamic.
- Delaying marriage until "fully established." Waiting years for the perfect salary while both people struggle to stay pure. Allah addressed the money fear directly:
إِن يَكُونُوا فُقَرَاءَ يُغْنِهِمُ اللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ
In yakunu fuqara'a yughnihimullahu min fadlih
"If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty." (Said about marrying off the single.)
Quran 24:32- Treating the engagement like a marriage - covered above, worth repeating: no nikah, no relaxed boundaries.
- Impossible checklists. Rejecting good deen-and-character matches over caste, exact ethnicity, or inches of height. That's the "tribulation on earth" hadith (Tirmidhi 1084) playing out in real time.
- Hiding the marriage. Secret nikahs done to dodge families or legalities strip away the announcement, the wali's protection, and usually the woman's rights. Openness is a design feature of the halal.
