Prophet 23 of 25

Yahya (John)

يحيى

Given wisdom while still a boy; honored with a threefold peace

Symbolic scene from the story of Yahya (John)
Five words: a whole philosophy of commitment

Yahya was the miracle answer to his father Zakariyya's dua, born to an aged father and a barren mother, carrying a name no one had held before. Allah's first recorded command to him is five words that could reform a generation: “O John, hold on to the Scripture firmly,” (Quran 19:12), and He gave him wisdom while still a child.

The Quran paints his character in soft, glowing colors: tenderness from Allah, purity, taqwa, kindness to his parents, “and he was not a disobedient tyrant.” (19:13-14). He lived simply, feared Allah deeply, and confirmed the coming of Isa, whom his own mother's relative Maryam would bear. His story closes with a blessing recited over only him and Isa in this exact form: “And peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the Day he is raised alive.” (19:15).

The lesson to keep

Lesson: Take your deen with strength. Half-hearted religion was never the prophets' way.
